YAMA
Patanjali explained yoga in eight stages from which Yama is first. Yama is the first limb of yoga
Yama are the self restrictions that we have to apply in our daily lifestyle. They are a kind of self commitments.
Yama is the list of "don't do these " and there is complementary of it is Niyama which tells us "do these things", and together Yama and Niyama are personal obligations to live well.
According to Patanjali
Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra lists five Yamas, or moral restraints, which apply specifically to how you behave outwardly toward other beings.
- Ahimsa Non-Violence, Freedom from Harming
- Satya Truthfulness
- Asteya Non-Stealing, Freedom from Stealing
- Brahmacharya Moderation
- Aparigraha Non-Hoarding, Freedom from Grasping
1) Ahimsa
Ahimsa is the act of non-harming anything by any possible ways for example, by words, by physical actions, even by thoughts.
.Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra says “When you are established in ahimsa (non-harming), others will stop harming you.” You will be a space for gentle love and kindness.
Not harming anyone is by any kind is Ahimsa.
2) Satya
Never speak a lie, always speak the truth and discard listening to talks like gossip e.t.c.
Satya is being truthful in one's thought, speech, and action.
3) Asteya
Asteya is a Sanskrit word that means not- stealing.
the practice of Asteya demands that ones don't steal anything, or not intend to steal an unearned thing by speech, action, and thoughts.
4) Bharamcharya
it is not indulging in this or getting a feeling of joy from other things, including food and sex.Obsession with these things will take away from things which are really important.
Always being happy with what you are.
5)Aparigraha
Refers to keeping the desire for possessions to what is necessary or important. Don't take so much, don't desire those things which are not required or which come by other persons loses.
When we satisfy our desires a new level of greed and attachment starts to develop.
In conclusion, you must follow your moral values. These all Yama(restrains to yourself) must be applied at physical, speech, and thought level.
